The Ancient Stepwell in New Delhi (also known as Agrasen ki Baoli) is an incredibly unique stepwell located in the heart of the city. This supposedly haunted stepwell has become popular with tourists and photographers due to its incredible architecture. Be sure not to miss this peaceful hang out spot on your trip to Delhi!
How to get to the Ancient Stepwell in New Delhi
The best way to get around New Delhi without the hassle is with a private driver. We were shown around Delhi by India Driver Tours and we can’t recommend them enough. Their friendly and comfortable service took all the stress out of exploring Delhi. If you prefer to make your own way to the stepwell, the best option is by rickshaw.
If you book a private driver, you can ask your driver about the famous Lassi stand which isn’t too far from the stepwell. It tasted delicious and was definitely the best Lassi we’ve ever had!
Where to stay
The best area for tourists to stay in New Delhi is Paharganj. This place accommodates most to tourists so you’ll be able to find restaurants, cheap shopping and other backpackers. We had some difficult experiences with accommodation in Delhi, so be sure to read reviews before you book a place.

The online hours for the stepwell are 9am – 5:30pm. We visited at 9:30am and there were already a few locals and tourists but nothing too crazy. People have said they went as early as 8am although we’re not sure if the gate will always be open at this time. To have the place all to yourself it’s best to visit as early as possible.
What to expect
The Ancient Stepwell in New Delhi is a must see on your trip to the capital. The insane details are sure to amaze you and take your breath away. This stepwell once held water although now it is all dry. Since there is no water, you are able to walk all the way to the bottom and even through a small doorway leading inside the stepwell. As you walk down the many steps, you’ll also be able to hear the hundreds of bats inside.
There are 3 tiers, each full of countless archways and cool architecture that look beautiful in photos. The stepwells are amazing to explore in person and are nothing like we’ve seen before.
