The Camel Safari in Jaisalmer is one of the most popular attractions and the main reason people come to visit the Golden City. It’s an experience that you’ll never forget as you ride off into the desert sunset and sleep under the stars.
How to get to Jaisalmer
There are two main options to get to Jaisalmer. You can fly straight into Jaisalmer airport which is the most convenient, however domestic flights within India can be fairly expensive. The other option is to get a train which is much cheaper but can take a long time depending on where you’re coming from. Trains run between all major cities and they are fairly efficient to get. Just be sure to book your tickets online and in advance as seats tend to fill up quickly.
We took the long 20 hour overnight train from New Delhi into Jaisalmer to start off our India adventure. If you are getting the train, watch out for scams and fake ‘officials’. You don’t need to pay for another ticket or any station entrance fees if you’ve already pre booked your train ticket online. You can walk straight to the platform and board the train where the train conductor will check your seat and ticket.
Jaisalmer Desert Safari Costs & Itinerary
There are different packages and companies that offer a camel safari in Jaisalmer. It’s best to do a little research to see what suits you best. We ended up booking through our hotel ‘Royal Villa Jaisalmer‘ as they were super friendly and we trusted them the most. A 1-night camel safari in Jaisalmer will cost you around 1500 Rupees ($30 AUD) per person.
This will include a jeep pick up from your hotel that will take you to the desert starting point. You’ll each get your own camel to ride as well as some water, dinner/breakfast and a bed with plenty of blankets. After the camel safari, the jeep will be waiting to drop you back to your hotel.
Additionally, you can either do the tour in a small group or privately. The prices are the same per person. However, if you do a private tour you’ll have the option to sleep in a tent. We decided to do the group tour as we felt more comfortable with other people. We also recommend to NOT sleep in a tent! Sleeping under the open sky on a soft bed with blankets is what made the experience so magical for us.
Camel Safari in Jaisalmer
What to Expect
The camel safari in Jaisalmer was one of the coolest and most unique travel experiences we’ve had so far. After being picked up at your hotel, you’ll be driven into the desert for about 1 hour and dropped off in a remote location. Here you’ll meet your guide and the camels that you’ll soon be riding.
From here you’ll mount your own camel and start to head off into the distance towards the sand dunes. You’ll witness the sun slowly starting to set and see nothing around but a flat, dry landscape. It’ll take just over an hour till you reach your campsite. Luckily it was late afternoon so the heat wasn’t too bad. While riding the camels, you’re still exposed to the sun. It’s a good idea to wear sunscreen or cover up. It can get a little uncomfortable when riding the camel but nothing too bad. The camels are also quite tall so you’ll have a perfect view of the barren landscape.
Watching the desert sunset
After reaching the campsite, your guide will start to set up while you’re free to wander off and enjoy the sunset. You can watch the sky erupt in colour from the top of the sand dunes and watch the last bit of the sun go down.
As it gets darker, the temperature starts to drop so you can huddle around the fire. Your guide will prepare your traditional Indian dinner, consisting of rice, chapati, vegetables and of course some chai tea. After letting the food settle, you’ll jump into your beds and huddle underneath the blankets. You’ll want to stay up for a bit to gaze up at the stars from the comfort of your bed. As you look up, you can see the sky covered in stars and the bright moonlight shining onto the desert landscape.
The next morning you’ll be woken up by an incredible sunrise. After eating a quick breakfast, you’ll pack up and ride the camels back. The camel safari in Jaisalmer was one of the highlights of our India trip. We definitely recommend it to anyone!
