The Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour is one of the most popular things to do on the Gili islands. On your snorkel trip you can visit turtles, explore underwater statues and even a shipwreck. It’s definitely an activity you shouldn’t miss if you visit the Gili islands.
How to book a Gili Trawangan Snorkeling Tour
We booked our snorkel trip with the turtle sanctuary located along the main strip of Gili Trawangan, although we wouldn’t necessarily recommend booking through them. We found our boat driver a bit rude and he left us for 30 minutes to surf while we were on the tour. There are plenty of stalls all along the main strip of the island where you can book a trip.
Where to stay
Gili Trawangan is full of beautiful resorts as well as cheap guesthouses. The island is so small so no matter where you stay, you can easily have access to anywhere you want to go. We treated ourselves and stayed at the incredible Kelapa Villas which we highly recommend. If you’re looking for a hostel, Good For Ya Knee 2 is a cheap place to stay for backpackers.

Gili Trawangan Snorkeling Tour prices
We asked a few different stands and the prices and conditions vary slightly. At most places, we found that a public boat of 20+ people for 6 hours costs roughly 100K-150K IDR. We also found that a private boat costs 250K IDR for a 4 hour trip. Many places offer a glass bottom boat for the tours, which is a really cool addition to the experience.
What to expect from a Gili Trawangan Snorkeling Tour
If you plan on going on a snorkel trip, be sure to leave as early as possible. There are dozens and dozens of other boats and people at each stop. To make your trip more enjoyable, we recommend starting no later than 8am.
On the Gili Trawangan Snorkeling trip, you’ll visit many amazing spots such as the underwater statues, coral reefs, turtles and even an old ship wreck. During the trip you can even stop off at Gili Meno and explore the island for yourself.
We found the underwater statues to be very unique and even a bit creepy, but it’s definitely something you can’t miss on the Gili islands. The statues are just below the surface and are off the coast of Gili Meno. You can swim right amongst them as they are not deep at all.
Swimming with the turtles was a great experience. These majestic creatures glide along the water and are mesmerising to watch. However the turtles were the busiest and most crowded spot on the tour. As soon as a group of tourists spot a turtle, everyone swims towards and surrounds the turtle which makes it almost impossible to enjoy. There were many times where we got whacked in the face with someone’s flippers. If you find yourself lucky enough to be alone with one, it really is an amazing experience.
The shipwreck was an amazing sight. It was very deep so you can’t get too close without a scuba tank, however it’s still awesome to view it from afar.
