Hiking Mount Kosciuszko is a very rewarding experience while also being fairly easy. Hikers and adventurers of any level can take on the hike to Australias highest peak of 2,228 meters above sea level. In this blog we’ll be guiding you along the Thredbo to Mount Kosciuszko hiking trail.
How to get to Mount Kosciuszko
Mount Kosciuszko is located in the Kosciuszko National Park in Thredbo and is a 6 hour drive from Sydney. To get to the start of the hike, be sure to go to ‘Thredbo Village’. This is where you will get the express chairlift from. We drove from Sydney one day before our hike and stayed in the nearby town of Jindabyne.
Mount Kosciuszko Chairlift – Hours & Cost
The Mount Kosciuszko chairlifts are the easiest and quickest way to get to the start of the hike. The chairlifts begin to operate at 9am and finish at 4:30pm.
A return chairlift pass costs $37, or you can purchase a one way pass for $30.
Hiking Mount Kosciuszko – Best Route
There are many different route options which you can take to reach the summit of Mount Kosciuszko. The easiest option would be the ‘Thredbo to Mount Kosciuszko walk’. This walk starts by taking a 15 minute chairlift from Thredbo Village and drops you to the start of the trail. This hike is 13km return and takes roughly 5-6 hours.
If you’re after a more intense adventure, you can skip the express chairlift and walk from Merritts Nature Track in Thredbo Village. This uphill 4km hike will also add 2-3 hours onto your summit walk.
Additionally, the hiking trails are sometimes closed due to heavy snow, so be sure to check the weather before you visit.
Hiking Mount Kosciuszko – What To Expect
The Mount Kosciuszko hike is one of the most memorable things we’ve done in Australia. The 6 hour hike is filled with snow capped mountains, valleys, and lakes. The route is incredibly easy to follow because of the metal pathway that is flat for the majority of the hike. You wont need heavy duty hiking boots or a hiking pole. Jirapan and I did the walk in our vans and found it easy. Although if there is snow, you may slip or get your feet very wet.
Along the hike, you’ll also pass 2 viewpoint platforms. One is the halfway viewpoint and the other is a viewpoint of the icy lake. Additionally, throughout the hike you’ll have incredible views of the insane snow covered landscape. Once you reach the very top, you will have ultimate panoramic views of the snowy valleys below. At the top there will be a few people sitting along the rocks while taking in the mesmerizing landscape. Hiking Mount Kosciuszko was an unforgettable experience and we recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a weekend getaway!
Don’t forget to take sunscreen, snacks, and also plenty of water on your Mount Kosciuszko hike. Depending on the season, it might be a good idea to bring a thick coat as the wind at the high altitude gets very cold.
