We drove on our scooters to the John Suwan Viewpoint from our accommodation in the popular tourist area of Sairee Beach. From here it took us roughly 10 minutes. We managed to rent our scooter for 150 Baht per day. The drive towards the viewpoint is paved and easy to follow although there are some steep hills. Once you’re in the carpark, the walk to the top is fairly easy and takes about 15 minutes. The walk consists of climbing up many rocks and following a rope handrail. The hardest thing about the hike is the heat!
Where to stay
There are a variety of places to stay on Koh Tao. There are budget accommodation options spread out all over the island, although the most popular place to stay is along the west close to Sairee Beach. If you’re looking for a quiet place to stay, a popular guesthouse is Happy Bungalow. It’s located at the quiet end of the beach so you can get away from the loud bars and markets. If you’re looking to stay closer to the action, you can try Indie Hostel.

What to expect
John Suwan Viewpoint Koh Tao is definitely the best viewpoint on the island. Once you’re in the carpark, there aren’t any signs indicating which way to start walking. There is one upwards concrete footpath leading to what seems like the jungle. Although continue along for 2 minutes and you’ll reach where you will need to pay the entrance fee. The fairly easy 15 minute climb to the top makes this spot super easy to access for anyone to enjoy.
Once you’ve made it to the top, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible view of the two neighbouring beaches which are Chalok Bay and Shark Bay. As you enjoy the view, you’ll notice the bright blue water and many boats passing by. While you admire the scenery, you’ll also notice the insane amounts of tall palm trees.
