Nam Xay Viewpoint Vang Vieng is one of the most picturesque views overlooking the lush Laos landscape. It’s a hidden gem that not many people know of so you won’t find a massive crowd of tourists here. A short hike to the top of Nam Xay Viewpoint will leave you speechless as you admire the 360 degree views of the surrounding landscapes filled with jagged cliffs and rice fields.
How to get to Nam Xay Viewpoint
To get to Vang Vieng, we used 12Go to book a van from Luang Prabang. 12Go is a super cheap and reliable way to get around Laos and other popular Southeast Asian countries.

The viewpoint is roughly a 20 minute drive from Vang Vieng town. Cross the wooden bridge to get onto the other side of the river and follow the signs towards Blue Lagoon 1. At the intersection just before reaching Blue Lagoon, take the left and follow the dirt path. You’ll come across an elevated parking area with a hut indicating the start of the hike. The climb to the top should take you roughly 20-30 minutes. The easiest way to get around Vang Vieng is to rent a motorbike which you can get for 50,000 Kip ($8AUD) per day.
Where to stay
There are plenty of cheap accommodation options in the town of Vang Vieng. In the centre of town is where you will find the guesthouses and hostels, while the nicer resorts are slightly further away located along the rice fields. A popular and central hostel in town is the Real Vang Vieng Backpacker Hostel. If you’re looking for something more private, Molina Bungalows also offers cheap private rooms in the centre of town. If you have the budget, Vien Tara Villa is the perfect getaway in Vang Vieng as it overlooks the incredible rice fields. We definitely recommend checking this place out.

What to Expect at Nam Xay Viewpoint Vang Vieng
The climb isn’t too hard, although it can get quite steep and slippery especially in the rainy season. Additionally, there are handrails and steps to make your life easier. It’ll take you roughly 20-30 minutes to reach the peak where you’ll be rewarded with some of the most incredible views in Southeast Asia.
Once at the top you’ll notice some bamboo huts and platforms. The platforms will help you make your way around the jagged limestone rocks since they are fairly sharp. You’ll have a perfect panoramic view of the surrounding landscape which you can enjoy all to yourself as not many people hike this viewpoint.
Nam Xay Viewpoint is perfect to get a better view of the vast landscape that surrounds Vang Vieng. There are countless jagged limestone cliffs that tower over the lush rice fields. It’s also very peaceful and quiet at the top which makes it the ideal spot to soak up the breathtaking views. Additionally, there are plenty of different angles and views for you to take some unique photos.
Nam Xay Viewpoint Vang Vieng was the highlight of our trip in Laos. We’ve never seen such a vast and incredible landscape so we definitely recommend this viewpoint to anyone visiting Vang Vieng.
