Thredbo Accommodation

When visiting Thredbo, you have 2 popular areas where you can stay. You can either stay in Jindabyne which is a town located 30 minutes from Thredbo, or you can stay in Thredbo Village. We found Thredbo Village to be the ideal place to stay. It’s a very convenient spot if you’re looking to ski everyday or if you just want to be surrounded by the giant snowy hills.

We stayed at Crackenback Castle which is part of Lantern Apartments, and we can’t recommend it enough! Crackenback Castle is located on a hill which gives you a perfect undisturbed view of the snowy mountains in the distance and the village below. This beautiful cottage has 2 bedrooms and is ideal for anyone looking to be centrally located within the village. Each night you can walk 5 minutes to access a variety of restaurants and shops. Our favourite part of the cottage was the fire pit! Crackenback Castle comes fully equipped with everything you need from a kitchen to TV and wifi. We definitely recommend checking it out for your stay in Thredbo. Lantern Apartments also offers apartments in the same area if you’re looking for something a bit smaller but still in a central location.

Thredbo Guide

Getting to Thredbo

Thredbo is located within the Kosciuszko National Park and is roughly a 6 hour drive from Sydney. It’s also located roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes from Australias capital, Canberra. The best and easiest way to access Thredbo is by car. If you decide to drive to Thredbo in the snowy season, be sure your car is able to handle the slippery and snowy terrain. In winter it’s compulsory to have snow chains on you at all times while driving through the mountains. You can purchase snow chains from almost anywhere in the town of Jindabyne.

If you’re unable to drive, you can also access Thredbo by private bus or coach. There are coaches available from both Canberra and Sydney. You can find all the best coach companies here. Alternatively, you can also fly from Sydney to the Snowy Mountains Airport.

When to visit

As a guide to visiting Thredbo, the snow season runs from mid June to early October. However, the best months for snow are July and August when the temperatures are coldest. You’ll find the best deals on accommodation and ski prices during June and October, however snowfall isn’t guaranteed. Some weekends you’ll find the snow dumping and other times you’ll be caught in the rain. We visited in mid June and weren’t so lucky. There was snow the previous few days, however when we arrived, we unfortunately only saw a bit of snow as it rained most of our stay. Be sure to check the latest snowfall and weather forecasts to get the most out of your visit.

Thredbo Ski Hire

There are two spots in Thredbo where you can hire ski gear. You can rent your gear from the Friday Flat ticket office, or the Valley Terminal ticket office. Prices vary depending on your age and how many days you want to hire the gear for. For someone aged 22 years or older looking to rent skis for 1 day, it’ll cost you around $95 AUD. If you purchase your ski gear and lift pass in the same transaction online, you’ll receive a discount. We decided to hire our ski gear in Jindabyne at Monster Sports. For a 1 day rental it’ll cost you $55 AUD and if you pre order online, you can save 20%.

Thredbo Lift Pass

There are a variety of different lift passes you can purchase, depending on what suits you best! You can buy full day passes, or part day passes if you don’t want to ski all day. The cost of the passes also depend on your age, the time of year you visit and how many days you buy the pass for. For a full 1 day lift pass at the beginning of the snow season, it cost us $149 AUD per person. If you purchase your lift pass 7 days in advance online, you can save 20%. The lift pass gives you access to the whole mountain and all ski lifts so you’ll have endless fun! Purchasing a lift pass is one of the top things to do in Thredbo and a must for our Thredbo guide. Keep in mind that they don’t offer refunds if the ski lifts are closed. We had some bad luck with the weather and a lot of the ski lifts were closed. We tried to get a refund but they could only exchange our pass into an any-day pass for us to use at a later time.
